An abortion is the premature termination of the pregnancy either by spontaneous means (commonly known as miscarriage) or by a medically induced expulsion. Medically induced abortion is available up to 24 weeks, but the vast of terminations are carried out in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The further the pregnancy has progressed, the riskier the procedure and the more difficult it is to obtain. You need two doctors to certify that a termination is necessary for medical or psychological reasons.

The operation will be carried out at the hospital, or at a clinic. The decision to have an abortion is always a difficult one. Women need abortions for a number of reasons - financial or personal, or because the fetus is abnormal. Amniocentesis, the most commonly used tests for fetal abnormality, cannot be done until at least 14 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period.

The results take 2-5 weeks to come through, forcing parents to take the agonizing choice of having a baby born with an abnormality or going through with a late abortion. Chorionic Villus Sampling is a possible alternative to amniocentesis in some cases. It can be performed as early at eight weeks into the pregnancy and can give results in 5-12 days.It does have some risks, but it gives the woman the choice of an abortion in the first three months.
If you think you may be pregnant and you're unsure whether you want to have the baby, it's important to have a pregnancy test as soon as possible. The new do-it-yourself tests are very reliable and some can actually be used as early as the day you missed your period. If you are pregnant, the first step is to visit your GP.
She will confirm your pregnancy and discuss your options with you. If you decided on an abortion, she will arrange for you to see another doctor to certify that the termination is necessary. If you'd rather not visit your family doctor, you can go to your local Family Planning Clinic or to one of the specialized organizations listed on the right.
Types of Abortion
The type of abortion given depends on how far your pregnancy has progressed. The further advanced your pregnancy is, the more difficult and dangerous the procedure. When counting the weeks, start from the first day of your period.
Up to 12 Weeks
A Vacuum Aspiration can be performed. It's the simplest and safest form of abortion and can be carried out in a clinic or out-patients' department with a local or general anesthetic. A flexible tube is inserted into the uterus through the cervix and the uterine lining is sucked out. This takes about five minutes.
At 12-16 Weeks
A Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) can perform. It can be done under local or general anesthetic depending on the duration of the pregnancy and can be done on an outpatient basis, although it may mean staying overnight.
The operation takes about 30 minutes. The cervix is dilated and a vacuum tube is inserted into the uterus. The tube is connected to a pump which sucks out the womb lining and the fetal material. You may be given drugs to help the uterus contract and may experience stomach cramps afterward.
After 16 Weeks
An abortion involves an induced labor which is painful physically and emotionally. A saline solution or the hormone propagandist is injected into the amniotic sac through your tummy. You then have to wait for labor to begin, which can take anything up to 24 hours.
You will experience painful contractions as may be given or cervical rods used to speed up labor. A Dilation and Curettage (D & C) may then be given to make sure there's nothing left in the uterus and you will probably have to stay in a hospital for about three days.
After An Abortion
You will probably feel very relieved after the abortion and be glad it's all over. You will be told your gynecologist not to have intercourse for at least three weeks after the abortion and you should not use tampons for about a month You may experience some light bleeding but it's important that you see your doctor immediately if bleeding is heavy or you experience abdominal pain, vomiting or discharge.
Physically, you should be over an early abortion after about a week. For a later termination, physical recovery will take about two to three weeks. You will be asked to return for a check-up after six weeks. Emotional recovery will take longer. You may feel depressed and weepy for weeks or months. If you find it hard to cope, contact your doctor. They will be able to help you in this regard.
